If you don’t know me, I’m a five time award winning advanced digital marketing strategist and I help entrepreneurs create ride or die fans for life. So what I want to talk about today is does follow or unfollow work? So if you’re unfamiliar, follow unfollow is a strategy particularly used in Instagram, but it leaks into other social media platforms that you as an account holder, go around and follow a bunch of people and the goal is for them to follow you back and then you can unfollow them if you want. Or just keep this whole database of people following you and you following them SEO, does it work? Yes, it does work.

Is it effective? Is another story. So if you’re looking for vanity numbers where you just want to increase the amount of followers you have, then over time, follow unfollow is going to work. But if you’re looking for engagement or sales or things like that, it’s a whole different beast. So just think about when someone follows you and you’re like, who is this person?

I’ve never seen them before. And so you check out their posts a little bit and you’re like, oh yeah, I know, this is pretty interesting. I’ll give this a shot. But they unfollow you and you’re like, what the hell? Where’d they go?

What happened? Just imagine that on a grand scale, you’re not creating a lot of goodwill by doing follow unfollow, and it can damage your brand reputation in the long run. Like I said, if you need to get followers quickly, like you’re having a sponsored post or something, you need to add some little oomph to the amount of followers you have. It could work, but if you want it for a long term strategy, you got to give people a reason to keep following you. You know what I mean?

And so by unfollowing them after they follow you, this creates this bad taste in their mouths that is not going to translate to sales. So it’s in your interest to think of social media strategy for the long haul and not just like a little window of I need to get another 3000 followers soon, I’m going to do follow and follow. You’ll get those followers, but will they convert to sales? Probably not. Maybe some will, but on average it’s not going to work out.

So those are just a couple of thoughts ramblings how follow unfollow works and if it’s beneficial. It’s beneficial for the numbers, it’s not beneficial for sales. I hope that helps.
